Session 8 Summary
Royal Undead

After the brief battle with the undead in the forest, the party continued on; following the tracks of the 30 damned souls who had assaulted Fort Windross the prior day.

Soon, Ash found that horse tracks, heading the opposite direction, joined those they were following. But he discerned more than that. This same rider appeared to have ridden along with the undead for a time on the previous day. They assumed that this must be the same creature they had spotted on the hill a scant hour before.

As they continued west, they found the forest thinning, and soon were on the eastern edge of the Black Heath. Travelling between scattered trees, over low hills and frozen bogs, they could now see the ruins of an ancient castle on a low hill, a few kilometers off. They cautiously approached to within 500 meters, and Rodgar flew up and closer for a better look.

Barely the first story of the outer wall remained. Cracked and crumbled, with ancient debris scattered within and around the walls. On the near side there was an area surrounded by low stone walls, broken and battered by the ages. This structure obviously dated back long before the Blizard War.

Rodgar could see that the beyond the rise, the land dropped into a river valley, the ancient watercourse now dried up or frozen over.

Nearer to the structure, Ash found that the tracks they had been following split into two smaller groups, one heading to the left and one heading to the right around the hillock. The rider’s tracks, however, led straight up to the ruins. Ash and his northern cousin, Icy ,stealthily approached the ruins — the others, well back, but ready. At the low rock walls, they could see a slight mound in the earth, indicating a possible burial place. The ancient Saxa, believed that their dead should be buried close at hand, so that they could be be in the company of loved ones. They used no grave markers.

Ash could see the rider’s tracks passing to the left of the structure, so he snuck up to the right. As slight blur of motion beyond the inner wall signaled him to pending danger. He silently signaled Icy and the others, and waited with bow poised for anything to appear. Bastet used her connection to nature to increase her own druid magic. She could feel her power growing immensely.

Chillfist used his Hrimwisard power to burrow beneath the snow and appear just past Ash. On the far right of the stucture he saw two ancient mummified undead in full bronze armor, their leathery skin taut across their bony faces and hands. They had their ancient bronze longswords drawn. They stood there, staring at him, but made no motion to engage.

Ash came up beside and let loose an arrow that missed it’s mark, then Chillfist let off three bolts of ice magic and sent them scurrying for cover, near the back wall. As Chillfist moved closer, he could see four more of the creatures within the ruins. He shouted a warning to Icy, Rodgar, and the warriors of Scaetha, who were nearing the ruins.

The battle was now engaged. Upon sight of these creatures, Bento, the snow leopard, retreated in fear. A few of the soldiers held back a minute, shaken by the sight. The undead moved further into the ruins, drawing cover from the rubble, beckoning the intruders to dare enter their domain.

Rodgar took the first one down with bolts of electricity that were amplified by the metal armor the creatures wore. Chillfist’s ice bolts missed their mark, striking huge chucks of rubble and debris instead. Bastet moved closer and could feel her connection with nature draining away. This place was as unnatural as the beings the fought. As Bento regained his animal courage, Bastet boosted Ash’s fighting skill.

Now that Rodgar was closer, he spied four more of the creatures in the back corner of the ruins. As they moved to defensive cover, a trap door swung open and in a blurred motion another of these beings came forth. Clad in the same bronze armor, with a bronze crown upon his head and a tattered cape of crimson he was a fearsome, unnatural sight, moving with an unnatural quickness.

The soldiers, who were used to fighting all manner of undead were shocked. They recognized this as a Royal Hagbui, a barrow dweller, an ancient saxa king bound to this place that would have been his home in life and now was his prison in undeath. These others must have been noble warriors of that unknown king.

Although hardened by battle, the soldier, Kaylien, could not take the strain and he fell to the ground as his heart began to fail.

Bento ran again in fear, Ash and Chillfist were shaken. Icy had now engaged two of the petty hagbui, but metal end of his spear rusted away as this king spoke. Moving swiftly, the king approached the group speaking another auld saxa spell that failed to materialize.

Things did not look good. The warriors came forward to engage the petty hagbui in combat with Icy, and young Timoth brought down one with a single blow. As the heroes tried to recover their resolve, the king ushered a loud, tormented wail that shook them to the core, leaving several unable to attack. He then rusted Chillfist’s mace in his very hands. Two of the petty hagbui moved to protect their leader.

Within a few seconds, the rest of the hagbui rushed forward. Rodgar continued to fly in, using his electrical attack to take down more hagbui. Ranolf slew one of them, as Icy tried to recover from the terrible sense of dread that was affecting his ability to fight.

The king wailed again. Chillfist’s fear ran so deep that a streak of his snow-white hair curled and blackened, and Ash, trying hard to hold back his terror, felt his left eye begin to twitch uncontrollably. Rodgar found himself shaken by his own faith. And the king, sensing the opportunity, rushed forward to engage Ash.

But with no sense of his own vitality, the King did not notice his Vigor drop severely as Bastet used the power of life against the force of death. The king tried to rust one of Ash’s longswords and failed. Ash panicked and threw all caution to the wind, delivering a devastating blow that left the Royal Habui barely on his feet. Rodgar moved quickly, and with three bolts of lightning brought the king to the ground, his tortured spirit finally at rest.

The last few petty hagbui were brought down and only one remained. Icy, Ken, Timoth and Chilfist had him surrounded. But Rodgar, cocky after his take-down of the king, let bolt after bolt into the fray. A stray bolt struck Chillfist, and another brought down Ken.

Timoth brought down the last lone hagbui, as Bastet ran to Ken in a desperate attempt to keep him alive. She succeeded, then moved on to Kaylien, sure that his heart must have failed by now. Again, luck was with her as she dragged him quickly into the natural wood and sent life giving druidic power through him.

The battle was won, and a mysterious trap door led into the ground. Icy borrowed a torch and cautiously walked down the ancient staircase into the deep ground. The stairwell opened into a 20 foot by 20 foot store room filled with chests, jewels and other treasures of the ancient lords. As his foot touched the last step, a sharp blade swung from the ceiling, narrowly missing him.

Ash, Chillfist and Bastet joined him as he yelled out his excitement. A quick search of the horde revealed a short sword forged of Starmetal (found by Bastet), a suit of human sized chainmail and two nicely crafted short swords. They estimated the treasure trove having a value between 5,000 and 10,000 gold scields.

Session 7 Summary
Towards the darkness

The group tidied up their work in Aslov. They sold one of the pack mules and the cart and outfitted the remaining one with saddle bags and packs. Bastet was offended that her father thought so little of her skills to send her cousin Icykeen along, but accepted him into the group.

Ashandarei sought out the merchants of Aslov, having no desire to look for members of the Reliquary of visit Thunor’s temple. Through successful bargaining he got the best price he could for the mundane items the group had accumulated along the way (fallen foes gear and equipment).

On the third Milcdaeg of Snaermonan the party left Alov, heading south on the trade route toward the Upper Guard and Darkwood beyond. A light snow was falling and the clouds became heavier as the day progressed. Icykeenwyrm stayed ahead of the group on point.

By early evening, a strong wind was coming up and the group felt it was time to make camp. A few miles onward, they came upon a series of craggy hills that looked to offer some protection from the cold. Upon investigating, they found a small cave and sent Bento in to investigate, he entered and came out a moment later. Realizing that it was probably safe, but that a snow leopard can reveal much information, Rodgar entered the cave.

Out of nowhere, the icy blast of a Hellfrost Spider’s spray of freezing liquid hit Rodgar square on, freezing him in place as the beast rushed forward baring it’s single large fan. Rodgar screamed out, and rather than try to break free, he quickly cast an electrical barrier between him and the spider as he felt the cold draining his strength.

The party rushed forward. Icykeenwyrm, with a speed none could match and the strength to go with it was quick to ripped Rodgar free and set him aside. Bastet, was reeling in fear; nearly paralyzed at the sight of this eight legged, white haired monstrosity. Her attempt to call upon the magic of the natural world was in vain.

The spider rushed against the barrier, unable to break through, then retreated back into the crevice it had come from, but not before Bastet could summon her courage and weaken it’s Vigor through her druid magic. Rodgar released the barrier, and Icykeenwyrm rushed forward, drawing his long sword into a sweeping blow that cleaved the weakened beast in two. Bastet would not stay the night in the cave.

The next day, the snow continued to fall, but the winds were light and travel was unhampered. On the third day, they came upon two covered wagons; a caravan of Engro traders heading to the Low Winterlands with their wares. They shared company for a hour or so and learned that the band had traveled from near Weem in The Vale, a journey of some 600 miles. Having recently passed through Darkwood, the used the protection of the Iron Guild mercenaries to keep them safe. There had been two attacks by zombies and skeletons during their passage.

By the end of the fourth day, they reached the upper guard and took refuge in the fortified manor house there. Rodgar searched for any members of Thunor’s church, but none were about. They paid for some rooms and ate at the tavern. During their respite, a member of the Iron Guild struck up conversation telling tales of his 20+ years protecting caravans on the road through Darkwood.

The party learned more of the legends of the Black Heath and Darkwood; that the three lieutenants of the Liche Priest, Angharad (female), Angtharinax and Taxmagulus, have ruled the Withered Lands since before the Blizard War. In the early days, the followers of [Scaetha] and others had waged open war against the liches and their dark hordes, but after the Golem uprising of 341-345 IR, the Paladins have only been able to the undead at bay.

As well, a expedition to Angtharinax’s dark tower some thirty years ago found it empty, the dread liche having vanished. Searches across Rassilon have turned up no trace of the liche lieutenant, and Scaetha’s followers are worried that he could have so fully eluded their surveillance.

The next day the group headed west some 25 miles to Fort Windross, situated two miles north of the Withered Lands near the edge of Darkwood and the beginning of the Black Heath. When they arrived they could see corpses in the field outside the drawbridge of the motte and bailey keep. A section of wall just west of the drawbridge was being hastily refortified by several soldires.

The sergeant of the guard, Wiglaf, recognized Rodar immediately and welcomed the party. He explained that this was the remnants of a battle against 30 or so undead earlier in the day, and the third such occurrence in the last two weeks. The food supplies that Rodgar had arranged from Dalsetter had already arrived and the fort was in good shape. Rodgar assisted with the repair of the fort as the others were given accommodations.

After a meal they were introduced to Sir Rocha ap-Serin, a paladin of Scaetha and captain of the fort. Rocha’s fear was that some new source of power in the northern Withered Lands was driving the attacks. He had planned to send sergeant Wiglaf with a squad of men to scout into the forest in the morning. Rodgar volunteered to lead the force, so that Wiglaf experience could be put to use defending the fort if needed. The rest of the party offered to assist.

Heading out in the morning of the 4th Monandaeg of Snaermonan, with five loyal soldiers of Scaetha, the group entered the mist enshrouded forest. Even in the dim light of the mist, Ash was easily able to follow the tracks of the 30 damned souls that had attacked the fort. After five or so miles they were beset by undead, 4 zombies, 7 skeletons, and 4 skeletal warriors clad in bronze breast plates and armed with short swords.

Chillfist, who had been thinking about the curse that Hela had put upon him and how this would affect his ability to deal with the walking damned, was slow to react and had two skeletons apon him in an instant, gouging him with their bony claws. A couple zombies were not far behind. Bento made quick work of one skeleton, and the soldiers held their ground to protect Bastet, move to Chillfist and caused his wound to heal in an instant.

Seeing the armour clad warriors, Icykeenwyrm rushed forward to attack with his long spear. His first blow missed, and in an instant the four were upon him.

Rodgar worked alongside one of the soldier to fight back several skeletons, three more soldiers moved against the zombies, and Ash quickly drew two weapons and moved to protect Chillfist. The battle was quick, but tense; an ominous feeling behind the ferocity with which the undead came upon them. In just over a minute they had dispatched the last skeletal warrior and as they did so, looked around for any further danger.

None seemed apparent, then a slight movement on a nearby hill, barely visible through the twisted leafless trees drew Chillfist’s and Icykeenwyrm’s gaze. What they saw froze them in their tracks, a hideous warrior being, clad in black plate male, armed with a jet black lance and massive great sword sitting upon some sort of demon steed. Eldritch energy swirled around him and glowed, sickly green, from the breaks in his armor. His steed was jet black with glowing red eyes, it’s bit and bridle made from twisted barbed wire.

The creature took one last, long look at the party, then turned and rode off over the hill.

Session 6 Summary
Return to Aslov

After collecting all the spoils of the Vermin Lord, the group decided to travel back to Aslov, via Dalsetter, to trade in their wares and buy new goods.

They had just finished with the Vermin Lord and Rat King, taking the heads back to Dalsetter and gaining much glory. Gifted with a feast, two cart mules and a cart, they made their way along the road, past the ruins of Dunross and camped for the night.

During the first watch, a goblin shaman and 8 goblin warriors made their way up to the camp and ambushed the party. Rodgar, the Engro Paladin of Thunor, must have been lost in his thoughts.

Chillfist, the Frostborn Reliqus Mage, had his bodyguard spell active. The guard, though unable to speak, was ordered to wake Chillfist at the first sign of trouble. He hastily did, and Chillfist awoke to see a whirling vortex of snow rise up around him, his bodyguard and the unsuspecting Rodgar, obscuring their vision as goblin warriors rushed them.

For a few moments, things looked grim. By the time that Basted and Ash, the two elven members of the party, were roused, Chillfist had finished four of the goblins with his ice bolts. The shamen changed tactics and let loose bolts of his own at Chillfist, nearly wounding him, before fleeing with his two remaining warriors.

Bastet’s snow leopard, Bento, made short work of the warriors as Rodgar put a barrier spell around the Shamen. After interrogating him, Ash made quick work of the pest.

The next day, they had the distinct impression that they were being followed. They stayed the night in the safety of the travel tower that had housed them on there journey to Dunros. In the moring, Ash searched for tracks and found that a party of 4-8 orcs had been about. They tracked them several miles north, and caught a glimpse of more of the Eye Peircer tribe heading off in the distance.

By the next evening they had reached Aslov. Those few survivors of Dunross were camped in the shanty town outside the city waiting for the priestess of Eostre to arrange some sort of aid. Ash could not stand to see the sight, and gave them some gold shields to ease their suffering.

During their week in Aslov, Feurn assisted Chillfist in tracking down an Arcanologist, who took the battered rat statue of Vali to return to the Citidel. He did mention that word had surfaced of a relic of some sort in the Withered Lands. More, he either did not know, or was unwilling to say.

Rodgar visited the church of Thunor, and his old mentor Leofric Garthsunu. Leofric already had word that the shipment of food from Dalsetter had reached fort Windross (where Rodgar had previously been stationed), but that the denizens of the Dark Forest had twice now attacked the fort, their ferocity heightened more then normal. He was ordered to return and help defend the fort, and attempt to subdue these incursions.

The group also visited the local temple to Ertha and told of the find in the ruins of the old temple. The priestess was grateful, and the group now has a one time use of the Connections edge with regard to the church of Ertha.

During their stay they ran into Bastet’s cousin, the brawny elven warrior Icykeenwyrm. He had been sent by her father to see that she was alright and watch out for her. Obviously, her parents still didn’t feel that she was ready for the world of other races, and perhaps that Ash was not enough protection.

Feurn, now with more money to pump into his failing business, decided to stay back in his home city, having had quite enough adventure for one week.

Journal and Plot Summary

I’ve decided to write our weekly game up as a Journal from the perspective of my character Ashandarei so we can look back from time to time to see where we started from. Additionally I will post a summary of key plot points as we discover them so we can keep track of the twists and turns of what is happening in our campaign.

Here are the first two such entries.

Well, there isn’t much to log yet, other than that we have decided on a campaign setting and I’m getting started on preparatory work. I’m going to be using Obsidian Portal to document as much of the story as seems reasonable. I’m using this pre-game time to get familiar with the site and the advanced editing such as complex tables and colors.

I’ve already learned tons.
